1976 Ford 4x4

Postby BigJohnSFV » Wed Apr 05, 2017 1:39 am

Does anyone know if Ford made a "super cab" 4x4 in 1976? Production numbers, engine size etc. information would be very much appreciated. I have a 76 F-250 Super Cab with a 460 cu.in., C6 etc and a 77 long bed 4x4 with a 351M engine. I'm in the contemplation stages of transplanting the 76 body onto the 77 frame. I get 8mpg as it is, so I figure it can only get better. Super Cab with a flat bed should save a couple pounds at least, and the 351 has got to be better mpg. Thanks in advance.

According to everything I've seen and read. The Super Cab 4x4 was not available until 78 and a 4x4 with a 460 wasn't offered until 1983. However I heard they did a very limited production run in 79 F150's. And even after 1978 the super cab 4x4 was still not offered in a short bed until the 80's

All I've read has said that the 1977 351M engine, due to smog regs, 2bbl carb, low compression, etc., gets about the same mpg as the 1976 460...A WHOPPING EIGHT MPG!!! But at least it's predictable, that's A/C on or off, uphill, downhill, loaded or not, head or tailwind, towing a Chevy or a heavy equipment trailer with everything from a 54 Buick to a 10,000 gallon water tank. Same 8 mpg. Now here's the question: As I've decided to keep the 460, can I just remove the tailshaft housing from my C-6, the rear diff from my 76, do the same to the 77 4x4 ( to include the transfer case, both driveshafts, the front diff, front springs and steering components), and " bolt in" to my 76 frame? Were the frames of the 2wd 76 and the 4wd 77 long bed the same? To the point of bolt holes/ placement locations for front springs? The 76 Super Cab 460 cu. in. 4X4 is one they SHOULD HAVE MADE but didn't, so I WILL! ( I think). Any info, previous experiences, issues etc I can get will help my final decision . making. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ALL HELP AND ADVICE!!!

I think I know what you're asking , but it's been a long day and I'm drinking a few beers. :-D

The 4wd frame is different than a 2wd.

To change the output shaft of the trans you have to take them all apart , it's the first thing that goes in.
But your 460 will mate up the 351M trans , even the torque converter should work.

You could put your super cab on the 4X4 frame but you'll need to retrofit the rear cab mount. and make a short flatbed.
That would be easier than making a 2wd truck 4wd. :2cents:
