Mid 70's F100 factory AC

Postby BonsallPete » Wed Dec 28, 2016 8:47 am

Has anyone seen a good exploded parts diagram showing all the components for the 74 factory air system?

I bought a truck that did not come with factory air and want to add the AC, and don't care for the look of after market systems that go in below the dash. I'm trolling around online for all the components but need to have an idea of what all the pieces are... found a heater core and the registers locally but need the ducting and other misc parts.

I'm also thinking that buying the compressor and condenser new from LMC or similar might be smart since they're so critical to making the system work - unless anyone has advice about that.

I would simply find a donor truck to get all the parts from. Keep in mind the 73-74 had a 2 hose heater valve instead of the 1 hose valve used later so the vacuum switches on the controls are different. Also you will need the remove the instrument panel and cut a much larger hole in the firewall to allow for interior and exterior boxes to connect to each other. You can avoid this if you locate a truck with dealer installed air. The main thing I can tell you after converting my factory a/c truck to 134A is get a modern high efficient condenser and maybe even a rotary compressor. It cools but just barely takes the edge off here in South GA...

These are from a 74 truck shop manual. Hope they help...
