Reinforcement Kit, Pickup Box Cover

Starting Sept. 1, 1977, all pickups equipped with a factory topper and/or push bar were required to install a reinforcement kit for the front sheetmetal to comply with Federal safety standards.

All the pieces pictured on this page are part of PN D8TZ-9900012-A (Group No. 00012), which is the 'Reinforcement Kit (Pickup Box Cover)'. Here's a diagram from the 1973-1979 Ford Truck Master Parts Catalog (MPC) which shows the components:

This decal is installed on the inside of factory Ford toppers made in '78 or '79 and states:

"Installation of this cover on a Ford pick-up truck not equipped with the above components may cause the vehicle to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 219, Windshield Zone Intrusion, applicable to vehicles built September 1, 1977 and later."

Ford also put out a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) article detailing the installation of the Reinforcement Kit.

< Ford TSB Article 149 - Bulletin No. 149
   December 23, 1977

Ford released a correction to the above TSB article in July 1979 to include Supercabs, which was mistakenly excluded from the list of applications in the original TSB article.

ADMIN NOTE: I removed a Reinforcement kit from a truck at a local salvage yard and the parts are currently in storage. In the very near future I'll retrieve them to get better pictures, including the Group No. 03294 Lower windshield retainer (not pictured here).

In addition to the Reinforcement Kit pictured above, 1977-1979 hoods incorporated a notch in the hood bracing to act as a 'crumple zone'.
